It’s camping time! We headed out last weekend on our first camping trip of the year. We decided to check out a new campground and chose Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont, Md., about an hour northwest of D.C.
We planned to leave Friday evening and camp for two nights but severe thunderstorms kept us home for the night, which also happened to be our seventh wedding anniversary! Instead, we headed to our favorite new Mexican restaurant to enjoy some great food and drinks and celebrate another great year together.
Saturday morning we woke up early and made our way to the campground. The rain was gone and so was the warmer weather – it was only in the 60s in the woods and neither of us was prepared with warm enough clothes.
After unpacking the car and setting up the tent we headed out on a hike to see the falls. Many of the online reviews for the campground complained that the falls weren’t much to see, but thanks to all the rain the night before they were cascading.
We spent the afternoon relaxing at the site and playing games before making a fire and dinner. It was still chilly when we woke up Sunday morning, so it was a perfect time to try our new camp stove to heat some water for coffee. We also made eggs, toast and roasted potatoes; the camp stove worked perfectly and we enjoyed having a warm breakfast.
It was a great first weekend camping and a fun way to celebrate our anniversary. We can’t wait to get out camping again, we already made a reservation at one of our favorite campgrounds for later in June.
